UUMMANNAQ
Surrounded by steep islands, and an endless supply of icebergs from the Qarajaq Glacier, Uummannaq is the centerpiece of an archipelago where everyday hunting and fishing life plays out in the middle of one of nature’s grandest creations in Greenland.
The iconic heart-shaped mountain of Uummannaq towers almost 3900 feet over the island, and the symbol of the heart is an unmistakable landmark for visitors from far and wide, inspiring travelers and locals alike to look skywards on the many sunny days in this part of the country.
You may not notice when you arrive on a sunny summer’s day in Uummannaq, but this is a dogsledding community where sleds play an intricate part in the winter hunting systems developed over centuries in Western and Northwest Greenland.
In summer the 3 mile wide front of the Qajaraq Glacier to the east of Uummannaq produces huge amounts of icebergs which all flow into the archipelago around Uummannaq, but in winter these waters freeze over and create highways for hunters and travelers in the region.
